Her work explores the self through an interdisciplinary practice across live performance, 3D animation, sculpture, and experimental video game development. Drawing on her fascination with archiving her body through 3D scanning, Ava expands on dialogues around hyper-visibility, hypersexualization, voyeurism, and self-constructed mythologized avatars to channel grief, self-renewal, and intimacy. She has performed and exhibited at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (Madison, WI), Chicago Artists Coalition, Hyde Park Art Center of Chicago,&nbsp; DePaul Art Museum. She is a recipient of the 3Arts Make A Wave Artist Award and 3AP Artist Projects , and was named one of Newcity Magazine’s Breakout Artists of Chicago in 2024. Artist Statement &nbsp;&nbsp; Ava Wanbli is a multidisciplinary artist working across live performance, experimental video games, sculpture, and new media. She uses each medium to understand and record the body as it exists both physically and virtually. Drawing on her experience as a trans woman, she examines hyper-visibility, desire, and the ways identity is performed and perceived today. Her work centers on self-creation through mythologized and hyperbolized versions of the self. Ava examines archetypes that occur in displaying aspects of herself in both vulnerability and empowering acts of a desired future. Using real-time rendering, 3D scanning, motion capture, 3D printing, and video animation, she builds speculative environments where these identities take form and shift fluidly in the cycle of deconstruction and reconstruction. Ava approaches live performance as ritual, a way of cyclically making and remaking herself. Her performances move between intimate emotional exchange, 3D-scanned recreations of her archived body, and physical gestures . Throughout, she holds emotional presence as her body is shaped by voyeurism, grief, and rage, while moving toward self-actualization, intimate connection, and self unification. Her sculptures, printed from the same 3D models that populate her animations and game spaces, act as physical interfaces and traces of performed works. Each encounter with the work adds to a shared, living archive. A licensed phlebotomist draws 80 milliliters of Wanbli’s blood, foregrounding the trans body’s entanglement with the medical system, reuniting the body, and the process of becoming anew. This is both a site of survival and regulation. Accompanying this gesture, a video projection of deified versions of Wanbli speak on looking to new realities in acts of defiance by reminding the audience of their own power collectively. She sits on a 3D sculpture altar that connects to objects used in the animation video. In a gesture of self renewal and processing of grief, the blood that was drawn is then poured over Wanbli’s body as a ritual of connecting herself after experiences of near death, trauma, fear and moments of dissociation. During this the 3D animation depicts a mythology of recreated versions of herself speaking on how we process decisions to find a better world through self renewal and desires for intimate reconnection.&nbsp; At the end of the ritual Wanbli&nbsp; hands a video game controller to a volunteering audience participant. They then pilot her virtual avatar through a self-created digital “afterlife”. The audience shifts from witness to participant in reconstitution. Finally, Wanbli stands in the projection as a physical body washing away the blood with water. . Phantasmagoric :: Ouroborus is an artwork and ritual for self reclamation. A ritual to reunite dissociated bodies and refuse division as a transgender person and how collective care is important as people. &nbsp; The mirror can present new worlds Focal points of recognition Breaking systems as opportunity We see through the veil The density of our breath Speaking resonance Spit Shifting Ouroborouses lips tasting wet palimpests Consumers now consumed A Mirage was Born from your Heat Rising We returned to the ether i lived for this, I died for this you have so much power All of us were fool to believe otherwise your pleasure kept me alive You held me and i say thank you Thank you Thank you for holding me I desire in voice Heat from a star Rising up to create an image i am strong enough to now begin I am now calling A message Do we make a world in the images as once was or we take a risk and create one we have never seen before? The performance involves a 3D printed 1 to 1 scale recreation of a 3D scan I had of myself before ever coming out as a transwoman to myself, to the world, and before any physical changes began to occur in my transition. This effigy I resurrected, my “boy” self that I still believe exists in the simultaneity of who I am today. The process of my own understanding and recognizing what it means to become something in the public eye, while also collapsing temporalities as a form of communication across the collective variations of one’s self, is at the heart of this work's purpose and presentation. &nbsp; &nbsp; The performance utilizes a large video projection that contains a collection of video artworks i created over the last 3 years, the 3D scanned sculptural effigy, myself, and a gesture of giving that boy what he always wanted which is finally to sleep with a transwoman. That boy never would have guessed that that trans woman he would finally penetrate would be me. &nbsp; &nbsp; This work is about the way we consume bodies via media and the ways that archiving oneself in the consumption of our intimate moments through data collection, voyeurism, hyper sexualization of transwomens bodies, and the formats we an understand the reconnection with our past selves to hold them and love them with the desires that were never met. It is a space in exploring the questions on care for representations of bodies even in digital stasis or animated avatars. The levels explore themes contained in nightlife, sex work, and the process of becoming in those spaces. In each level you are asked to collect items and activate the 3D scanned bodies as a dialogue with how we consume bodies both narratively, digitally, and through labor of hyper sexualization. The rubbing of the bricks with water is on thinking of friction of body to clay. A ritual in molding myself as on a stage for consumption the viewer. The flueroescent lights being a signal as they are programming to blink in morse code on a send off message to my family and old life as i moved towards a futurity. The remnants of the performance leaves imprints of the oscillating movements of self identification and actualization.
